Why CLEAR specialises in home visits

One of the questions we’re asked most often is whether we run puppy preschool or group training classes. The answer is no. Many years ago, we did.

Over time, however, we began to notice something important. The dogs and owners making the greatest progress were often those receiving individual coaching in their own homes, where puppies and people could learn without unnecessary distractions.

That experience shaped the way CLEAR Dog Training operates today.

We haven’t moved away from group classes because they don’t have value. Group training can be enjoyable and beneficial for many dogs and owners. We’ve simply found that many puppies and families benefit from starting with individual coaching, where training can be tailored to their own home, their own dog and the challenges they face every day.

Home is where real life happens

The behaviours owners usually want help with rarely happen in a training venue.

Dogs don’t pull on lead in a hall. They pull as they leave the front gate. They don’t jump on visitors in a class. They jump on friends arriving at the front door. They don’t bark at the neighbour’s dog in a training room. They bark through the back fence.

Teaching skills where those behaviours actually occur makes learning more meaningful for both dogs and owners.

Working in the environment where those behaviours happen allows training to become practical and relevant to everyday life.

A home visit means we can look at the whole picture — the puppy, the household, the environment and the routines that make up daily life.

Every dog and family is different

No two households are the same. Some families have young children. Some have older dogs. Some owners are welcoming their first puppy, while others are experienced dog owners wanting help with a particular challenge or a future sports dog.

A home visit allows the session to focus on the individual dog and family rather than following a standard lesson plan designed for a group.

Whether the focus is toilet training, settling, puppy biting, visitors, walking nicely on lead or helping a new puppy become part of family life, the training is built around what matters most to that household.

Owners learn alongside their dogs

Training isn’t just about teaching a puppy new behaviours. It is also about helping owners understand why their puppy behaves the way it does and giving them practical skills they can continue using every day.

A home visit provides time to answer questions, explain behaviours and demonstrate strategies in the environment where they will actually be used.

The aim is not simply to create a puppy that responds during a training session. It is to help owners feel confident handling the situations that arise in everyday life.

Understanding real puppy life

We never forget what life with a young puppy is really like. Through our own experience living with dogs, raising puppies, competing and fostering, we understand that bringing a new puppy home is exciting, rewarding and sometimes challenging.

There are interrupted nights, toilet-training accidents, enthusiastic chewing, puppy biting and moments when owners wonder whether they are getting anything right at all.

That is completely normal.

Our role is to help families understand what is happening, work through challenges calmly and give puppies the best possible start.

Building skills for the real world

Starting at home does not mean staying at home forever. Once foundations are established, those skills can gradually be practised in parks, cafés, on walks and in other environments where owners want to enjoy life with their dogs.

A home visit simply provides the calm starting point where dogs and owners can learn together before those skills are tested in more distracting situations.
